Bone Grafting

in Greenville, NC

Healthy jawbone structure supports your teeth and maintains your overall oral health. However, bone loss can occur for many reasons, including tooth loss, gum disease, infection, trauma, or natural changes that occur over time. When the jawbone lacks sufficient volume or density, certain restorative treatments may become more difficult or less predictable.

At R. Anthony Murray, DDS, PA, we offer advanced bone grafting procedures designed to restore lost bone, strengthen the jaw, and prepare patients for future dental treatment.

What Is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that rebuilds areas of the jaw where bone has been lost or weakened. During treatment, grafting material is placed in the affected area, where it serves as a scaffold for the body's natural bone regeneration process.

As time passes, the graft integrates with existing bone and helps restore strength and volume to the jaw.

Several grafting materials may be used depending on your needs, including bone obtained from your own body, donor bone from a tissue bank, animal-derived grafting materials, or synthetic bone substitutes. Dr. Murray will discuss the most appropriate option during your consultation.

Types of Bone Grafting

Bone grafting procedures fall into two categories:

  • Minor Bone Grafting: Minor grafting procedures address smaller areas of bone loss and are often performed together with tooth extractions, dental implant preparation, or socket preservation procedures.
  • Major Bone Grafting: Major grafting procedures help patients who have suffered significant bone loss due to injury, long-term tooth loss, congenital conditions, or disease. They help rebuild larger portions of the jaw.

Sinus Lift

A sinus lift increases bone volume in the upper back jaw by gently elevating the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material beneath it. The procedure is recommended when insufficient bone is available to support future dental implants.

Socket Preservation

After a tooth is removed, the surrounding bone begins to shrink. Socket preservation places grafting material into the extraction site to help maintain the jaw's shape and volume while promoting healthy healing.

Ridge Augmentation

Ridge augmentation rebuilds areas of the jaw that have become narrow or deficient following tooth loss. By restoring the natural contour of the ridge, the procedure can improve both function and aesthetics while creating a stronger foundation for replacement teeth.
