Pre-Prosthetic Surgery
When the jawbone or soft tissues are irregular, excess, or uneven, it can affect how well a prosthetic fits and functions. At R. Anthony Murray, DDS, PA, we perform pre-prosthetic surgical procedures to create a smoother, more stable foundation for long-term restorative success.

What Is Pre-Prosthetic Surgery?
Pre-prosthetic surgery includes a variety of procedures that modify the jawbone and soft tissues in preparation for dentures or other restorations.
The treatments are tailored to each patient’s needs and may involve one or more of the following:
- Bone Smoothing and Reshaping: We gently smooth and contour uneven or sharp areas of bone to create a more even jaw surface.
- Removal of Excess Bone: Small areas of excess bone or bony projections are removed to refine the shape of the jaw.
- Bone Ridge Reduction: We carefully adjust the height or contour of the jaw ridge by removing select areas of bone to create a more balanced structure.
- Removal of Excess Gum Tissue: Excess or irregular gum tissue are trimmed and reshaped to better contour the underlying bone.
- Exposure of Impacted Teeth: We remove gum tissue and, when needed, a small amount of bone to uncover impacted teeth so they can be treated appropriately.

Who Is a Candidate for Pre-Prosthetic Surgery?
Pre-prosthetic surgery may be recommended for patients who:
- Are preparing for full or partial dentures
- Have irregular bone or soft tissue that affects prosthetic fit
- Experience discomfort with existing dentures
- Require reshaping of the jaw for improved function or stability
- Need additional surgical preparation before restorative treatment
A thorough evaluation helps determine which procedures are necessary to achieve the best possible outcome.
