Exposure of Impacted Teeth
Not all permanent teeth follow a straightforward path into the mouth. In some cases, a tooth may form normally but remain trapped beneath gum tissue or bone, unable to emerge on its own.
When this happens, surgical exposure — especially with upper canine teeth (eyeteeth) — may be recommended to help guide the tooth into its correct position as part of a coordinated treatment plan.
Why Do Impacted Teeth Need to Be Exposed?
Impacted teeth most commonly involve the upper canine teeth, which play an important role in your bite and smile. When these teeth do not erupt properly, they stay stuck in the jawbone or grow in the wrong direction.
Exposure may be recommended when:
- The tooth is unable to erupt on its own
- The tooth is trapped beneath bone or gum tissue
- Nearby teeth are blocking its natural path
- Orthodontic treatment requires the tooth to be guided into place
- Delaying treatment could lead to crowding or damage to adjacent teeth
What Happens During Exposure of Impacted Teeth?
Surgical exposure is performed in our office using local anesthesia, with sedation options available for patient comfort when needed.
Dr. Murray gently lifts the gum tissue to access the impacted tooth. In some cases, a small amount of bone covering the tooth may also be removed. Once the tooth is exposed, a small attachment may be placed on it to allow your orthodontist to guide it into its proper position over time.
The area is then repositioned and secured to support healing while still allowing controlled tooth movement.
Is Exposure of Impacted Teeth Painful?
Most patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure itself due to effective local anesthesia.
Mild soreness, swelling, or tenderness is normal for a few days after surgery and can typically be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter medication. Most patients return to normal activities shortly after treatment, depending on the complexity of the case.
